Inspired to tell the library's story

I've been told once or twice in my ten years in the library field that I do alright as a storyteller, proven I hope by my personally set challenge to make up a story using three things from the kids and parents that come along to each story time at the library on Tuesdays and Wednesdays of each week. Today at the February South Australian Librarians meeting we were all challenged by Patricia McMillan to write the story of our libraries...

Every great story has challenges, engaging and interesting characters, a journey, maybe a bit of romance... We need to workout what IS our story... What is the EPIC story of the Murray Bridge Library? To tell that we need to first determine the characteristics of our hero... The library... Is it Samwise Frodo's dependable friend or Alice headed down the rabbit hole? What stakes do we face, life and death? Belonging and isolation? Or is it as simple as finding meaningfulness for ourselves and our community? If we don't tackle the challenge who loses? If we do and we succeed who benefits? How do we take the leap... Tackle the challenge? Who are the allies that can support the transformation... Every great story has the change their world and themselves...

When we come to the edge of the chasm leap... The gap is never truly as large as it looks...

Once upon a time...
